Where the Money Goes

Child Poverty in India

Despite being a country of global historical and cultural importance, many of India’s communities are living in chronic poverty.

India is a country of extreme divide where currently the top 1% of the population hold 73% of the wealth, while 670 million people, comprising the country’s poorest, saw their wealth rise by just 1% over the last three years. Poor communities in India suffer from a lack of education, pervasive gender bias and poor hygiene conditions. About one third of Indian children suffer from lung problems due to pollution and unsafe living. Lack of access to job training and opportunities continue a poverty cycle that has lasted generations.

The Covid pandemic has compounded the already dramatic poverty in India. Save the Children warn the impact of health system overwhelm, lockdowns disrupting education and parental death will likely have had a devastating impact on millions of Indian children.

YoGift will support children who are coping with one or more elements of poverty.
